- Check the warranty clock. Every EV carries a federal minimum 8-year/100,000-mile battery warranty; from MY2026, CARB-state cars must also hold 70%+ health under that warranty. A 2021 car with 60k miles has real coverage left; a 2017 at 130k doesn't.
03Stress-Test the Range Against Winter Before You Buy

The loss is temporary, but if your winter commute eats a marginal battery's real range, that's a car you rent, not buy.
04Run the Charging Math — No Home Plug, No Deal
Level 1 (a wall outlet) adds 3–5 miles per hour — a trickle. Level 2 (240V) adds 25–45 miles per hour and is how owners actually live. DC fast charging gets you to 80% in 20–60 minutes but costs 2–3× home rates and, used constantly, stresses the pack. At ~$0.05/mile on home electricity versus ~$0.14/mile for gas at $4.60, home charging is where the EV math sings — no home charging, no EV, is still the honest rule for most buyers.
